Surge Protection
Protect your Equipment
Many modern businesses rely heavily on sensitive electronic equipment, making them more vulnerable than ever to damage caused by electrical surges and transient over-voltages. At Electric Technics Ltd, we design and install Surge Protection Devices (SPDs) that defend your systems from these invisible threats, preventing costly downtime, damage, and data loss.

What is Surge Protection?
A surge or transient overvoltage is a short-duration increase in voltage within a power system. While often brief, the damage these events can cause can be long-lasting, expensive, and in many cases, irreversible.
Even minor surges can degrade electronic components over time, with cumulative damage affecting critical equipment such as:
-
Computers, servers, and networking gear.
-
Printers and monitors.
-
Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs).
-
Building automation systems.
-
Security and communication equipment.
SPDs (Surge Protection Devices) are the most efficient and widely used solution to protect your electrical infrastructure. Installed in parallel to your power supply circuits, SPDs rapidly divert harmful surge currents away from your equipment. Overall, preserving the performance and longevity of your entire system.

How do they Work?
Surge Protection Devices normally operate with high impedance, remaining passive under normal voltage conditions. However, when an overvoltage is detected, the device instantly shifts to a low impedance state, redirecting excess current away from your sensitive equipment and onto a safe grounding path.
This swift action by the Surge Protection Device prevents voltage stress, extending the life of your electronics and reducing the risk of unexpected failures.

Where is it required?
According to the 18th Edition of the IET Wiring Regulations (BS 7671), surge protection is not optional in many circumstances. Regulation 443.4 mandates the use of SPDs in situations where overvoltage could lead to:
-
Serious injury or loss of human life.
-
Interruption of essential public services.
-
Damage to cultural heritage.
-
Disruption of commercial or industrial activity.
-
Impact on large groups of people in a single location.
Where these conditions do not apply, Regulation 443.5 requires a risk assessment to determine the need for surge protection. If no assessment is performed, SPDs must be installed by default.
