Shaun’s journey into the electrical industry began with early hands‑on experience and family influence, leading to a successful career overseeing complex commissioning projects at ET‑L.

How did you get into the industry?

“As far back as I can remember I had an electric model train set, which I wired up by myself in a parallel circuit. My dad was an electrician on the railway, and years ago, we as kids used to be able to go to work with him. I remember the buzzing of the transformer stations and control rooms. so that also had a big influence on me.”

Shaun started in the Electrical industry from the age of 16 when he enrolled at Tamworth college on a full time City & Guilds course.

During the City & Guilds course, at the age of 18, Shaun had a work placement with “Electric Technics LTD”. This work involved electrical installations on supermarket refrigeration systems and hotels.

Shaun has been with Electric Technics for all of his current electrical career, specialising in refrigeration controls commissioning. This has combined both his career in the electrical industry, and hobby of computer tasks.

What does your role involve on a day-to-day basis?

“As commissioning manager, I oversee commissioning tasks on various systems. I also get to dust the tools off and get involved on the install jobs with our team.”

What do you enjoy most about your job?

“I really enjoy starting with something that doesn’t work, and making it come to life. It gives me a sense of accomplishment”.

What do you think sets ET-L apart from others in the industry?

“I think the diversity of what we offer to the market makes ET-L different. We don’t do just one type of work; we specialise in a number of fields. These range from supermarket and industrial refrigeration electrical installations, Gas leak detection systems, System Manager commissioning. Network installations be it Belden, Ethernet or Fibre Optics. Hotel electrical works and CCTV. We are always willing to learn and adapt to new environments.

What are your main goals for ET-L over the next few years?

“My main goals for ET-L over the next few years, is to expand the business. I want to see ET-L become even more successful, and continue to be a company that our customers, both existing and new, can depend on. Another goal, is to ensure our employees are continuing to get the relevant training and assistance they require. I am actively getting more and more involved in the Health & Safety side of the business.

How would you describe ET-L in three words?

“I would say ET-L is: dedicated, supportive, reliable. There are many qualities I could say, but we always do our best to please our customers”.

What has been your biggest challenge as a director so far, and how did you overcome it?

“My biggest challenge has got to be learning more about the Health & Safety side of the business. There’s a lot to it! To overcome this, I am looking at attending more courses to learn more about the responsibilities a company has. As the industry changes all the time, this will be a constant learning curve.”

What’s one piece of advice you’d give to someone stepping into a leadership role?

“I’d say to be confident. Every day will bring challenges, and it’s best to be confident and meet them head on.”

What’s something people might be surprised to learn about you?

“My memory can be absolutely terrible outside of work. I am also red/green colour blind! Which some would say would be a challenge in my line of work. But I don’t find this a problem, I just have to double check!”

When you’re not working, how do you like to spend your time?

“I have a passion for going to concerts and festivals, mainly rock music but I have been known to go to a few raves in the past. I like attending Download Festival, every year since 2005. I also like to play online games with my friends on evenings, even if I’m not the best at it! I’m also very keen on sightseeing and visiting new places.
